The Line in the Sand

I was asked a “random” question this morning. It was in regard to a “Christians“ response to an invitation to a gay marriage.

In sitting, waiting, and being still, I know that They, our loving Trio, is wanting to show how Their principles apply in “our” day and time.

We truly have reached that day where the world is calling “good evil and evil good” and the Word says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who turn darkness to light and light to darkness, who replace bitter with sweet and sweet with bitter.”

More than ever before in our history, the dividing line is being drawn by the Holy God of Israel – – Jesus is drawing a line in the sand – – and the chasm between Light and darkness is getting wider and wider. There has always been this chasm, but now, we are seeing things – – things are being exposed for what they truly are—good or evil.

How far could or should a Christian go either way? We are called to be “salt and light”, but as my husband pointed out recently, if salt is poured into a wound, it stings. And that is one of the reasons, I believe, that Jesus used this analogy. Our model, Jesus, our Lord, was Salt. His words didn’t always have the quality of warm oil being poured over a person or a wound. He didn’t “sugarcoat” sin – – He wasn’t politically correct, and people, especially the government and the religious of His day, hated Him for it – – because He was Salt and Light– – His words carried a sting and His Light exposed the darkness that was all around, in the establishment, and especially in their own hearts.

So, how does that translate to our day? We live in an era where “political correctness“ and “tolerance“ and “open-mindedness“ extends to everyone – –EXCEPT CHRISTIANS! We, those that choose to follow Jesus, are accused at every turn that we are intolerant, hateful, and close-minded because we will not accept, and agree with, and engage in sin that goes against The Most High God and His precepts. We dare to say that there are lines we cannot cross and behaviors that are an abomination. We testify to a God that is Light and cannot fellowship with darkness.

Yet, then people will say – – “well, if there is a God that will reject me because I love this one, or that sends me to hell because of this or that, I don’t want that (kind of) God.” They cannot even see that in that very statement, it is NOT Our loving Father that is rejecting them – – they are rejecting Him, and it grieves His heart.

His precepts were given not to deprive us of life, freedom, love, or happiness – – NO—Just the opposite – – they were given to man/mankind as a gift because in His infinite wisdom He knew/knows what is detrimental to us: body, soul, mind and spirit. The truth is when you submit yourself to the Most High God, you don’t give up your rights —you get them. When we step outside of His precepts we bring, for lack of a better word, “negative energy” or consequences down upon us.

So, should Christians, for the sake of not offending (Jesus was very offensive, by the way), or for being “tolerant”, or “politically correct”, participate in events or actions, that clearly go against His precepts and principles—even or especially for their loved ones? I do not think that Jesus would have—That was part of the reason the people of His day hated and despised Him—simply His lack of agreement with them exposed the idolatry and sin in their hearts. Even when His mother and brothers came (because they were “worried” about Him, to collect Him, to “talk sense into Him”), He wouldn’t even acknowledge them as His kin (But Jesus answered the one who was telling Him and said, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?…for whoever does the will of My Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and sister and mother) because He knew the spirit that they were of, and operating in, on that day.

So, where is all this going? It is just to say this: If we are truly followers of Jesus and His Father, there is a line that has been drawn for us. A line that if we are truly His, it’s not that we cannot cross it, but out of love for Him—for Them, we do not. And, each time we choose to not step over this line, the scales begin to fall off and the line gets clearer and clearer. And will we offend? Yes—and for those that we will not compromise for, we become offensive. We will be rejected—yes— we will be despised, even hated—yes. But then, we will be in the good company of our Lord Jesus and we will have His mark truly upon us and be the ones for whom the scripture “you will be hated by all because of My Name, but the one who endures to the end, he/she will be saved” is fulfilled.
